5 inspirational female characters*

My favourite thing about watching films and TV shows is finding a character or two that I either really relate to, or look up to. I am always wanting a character to root for, even if they're not necessarily the most flawless! Read on for five of my favourite and most inspirational female characters from movies and TV!

I am an avid Netflix-binger and whilst laying in bed with my double-chin looking up at my laptop is all well and good, sometimes it's nice to treat myself to a lie down on the sofa, surrounded by chocolate and watching a good film on an actual television. It's like being in the cinema but without anyone putting their feet on the back of your chair. The Oled 4k TV from Panasonic would certainly be a treat for your eyes, with their high definition, super-bright display - you can watch your favourite characters come to life as if they were in the room with you!

I've been thinking a lot about women lately in the midst of everything in the news at the moment, feeling pretty proud to be one. It got me thinking about the portrayal of women in the media and rather than focusing on the negatives (and there are a lot) I wanted to cast my mind back to the female characters that have inspired and continue to inspire me to be the best gal I can be.

Elle Woods, Legally Blonde

Elle Woods is definitely one of my favourite female characters. It was always a joke in my family that the reason I went on to study Law at university is because I wanted to be Elle Woods (I mean, it wouldn't be a total lie).

One thing I admire about Elle is how she is portrayed as the media's favourite female stereotype - the dumb, blonde bimbo who spends her life in the nail salon. This isn't totally inaccurate in Elle's case... She does enjoy a good manicure, but that doesn't mean she sacrifices intelligence whatsoever.

She kicks ass, makes it into Harvard and becomes one of movie's favourite female heroines (whilst looking fabulous the entire time)!

My favourite Elle Woods quote: [You got into Harvard Law?] "What, like it's hard?"

Hermione Granger, Harry Potter

Hermione was a big part of my life when I was younger - I aspired to be just like her and I am so happy I had such a good role model when I was young.

Hermione taught me two things: one, that often people expect women to be quiet and subservient; and two, to give ZERO F*CKS about these expectations and to work to my strengths. Everyone thinks Hermione is a know-it-all at the beginning because she is extremely intelligent and works hard at school. This is seen as a negative, whereas Fred and George (although we love them) are renowned for being jokers and not taking anything seriously, but that's deemed okay.

Hermione's intelligence saves everyones asses multiple times. Not only is she smart as hell, she's loyal and brave - a genuine all-rounder. I am 22 years old and I still aspire to be Hermione Granger.

My favourite Hermione Granger quote: "The truth is that you don't think a girl would have been clever enough!"

Brienne of Tarth, Game of Thrones

Don't get me wrong, I'd include pretty much every female (not you, Cersei) GoT character on this list if I could. The medieval times were not kind to women.

Brienne kicks ass throughout the entire series, challenging 'traditional' gender roles and taking a lot of abuse for it. Every battle scene she is in gives me chills as she constantly proves she's just as good - if not better - than any other male fighter.

Brienne is loyal and honourable, upholding every vow and promise she makes. She's a kind-hearted person whilst also being a friggin' badass. PROTECT BRIENNE AT ALL COSTS.

My favourite Brienne of Tarth quote: "All my life, men like you have sneered at me. And all my life I've been knocking men like you into the dust."

Kathryn Merteuil, Cruel Intentions

Now this one is a little controversial... Kathryn definitely does not come without her flaws, but even those you can weirdly respect her for.

Pushing her manipulative personality and drug-abuse problems aside, I most admire Kathryn for reminding the audience that sexuality shouldn't be something that is just reserved for men to enjoy. Don't get me wrong, the main plot of the movie is her trying to ruin people's lives through their sex lives, but I admire Kathryn for being a confident woman who exudes sensuality.

Society forces a weird ideal onto women when it comes to sex - if you're having lots of sex, you're a slut, but if you're not having any sex then you're a prude and both make you completely undesirable. How are we supposed to win?! Kathryn doesn't care and I dig that.

My favourite Kathryn Merteuil quote: "God forbid I exude confidence and enjoy sex. Do you think I relish the fact that I have to act like Mary Sunshine 24/7 so I can be considered a lady?"

Blair Waldorf, Gossip Girl

This list would not be complete without Queen B. She may have made some questionable choices throughout the ten thousand seasons of Gossip Girl, but you can't fight me on the fact that Blair is hands down the best character from the entire show. With Dorota being a close second.

Blair is unrivalled in her wit and intelligence, which tend to save the day when she uses these skills for good. She is the most driven and ambitious character in the entire show and probably more so than most other female characters in any TV show or film.

She goes through trials and tribulations in her love life, but she still loves herself before anyone else. She dumps the love of her life Chuck Bass because she wants to focus on being her own person and not just romantically attached to an influential male.

Blair is loyal to Serena; despite their fights, she knows who her friends are and would do anything for them. Bravery, wit, intelligence, loyalty and fierceness are her finest qualities and the parts about her character that have always inspired me the most. Can we have a Blair Waldorf spin off?!

My favourite Blair Waldorf quote: "I'm not a stop along the way; I'm a destination."
